Introducing the JIC Project

Here at Companion Intelligence we want to provide personal intelligence. Intelligence that there when you need it, that is contextual, personal, secure, low latency and actionable. There are so many ways that having the right facts at your fingertips can make a difference - from home automation, to coaching, to purchasing decisions. But one topic that seems to come up often is personal safety. We are so used to having 911 or the Internet at our fingertips, we don’t stop to think what it would be like if we were disconnected from those wider services - even for a day. This is why we’re releasing the Just In Case project - an ongoing effort to provide an LLM backed corpus of critical information that you might need ‘Just in Case’.

What would you do if there was a home fire? Or an extended power outage? What is your families plan for region-specific threats such as tornadoes, tsunamis, or forest fires? Do you have any emergency fallback food supplies if there is an earthquake or if you have to shelter-in-place? Do you have cash if ATM's are down? Where is your agreed upon muster-point if cell services are down? Where are local emergency services? What would happen if you didn't have access to the Internet or cell service during a crisis?

A good plan thinks about common disaster risks where you live. It considers emergencies at small, medium and large scales. Some emergencies may require you to leave. Others may require you to shelter-in-place. Many will require some resources. Most of all a good plan requires access to information.

We all know that emergency planning is essential for protecting yourself, your loved ones, and even your pets. Having a plan can mean the difference between life and death.

The JIC dataset is an offline digital library that can be used without the Internet. It is curated and well organized on disk, with search tools and an AI interface. The focus is on 'actionable information' - survival guides, medical references, even agricultural know-how and engineering resources, as well as broader educational materials like offline Wikipedia and open textbooks. If the Internet goes dark, you should still be able to find the critical knowledge that can make the difference in a crisis.

We also provide an AI to help you build and stick to a plan. It can talk to you in your language, at your comprehension level, can quiz you on the basics, and help make sure that resources are in place on an ongoing basis to help protect your loved ones and your community.
